What is Social Media?
Social Media or otherwise known as “social networks” have been growing in popularity since the early 2000. First the kids jumped on MySpace, creating personalized pages about their interests and hobbies, while sharing their photos with one another. Then Facebook, Friendster, Yahoo, Plaxo, LinkedIn, MSN and other sites have followed suit and joined the craze. Over time, as more and more data has been collected by these “social network” websites (and their owners) they became an obvious online marketer’s heaven for data mining and precision customer targeting. Just imagine how accurately you can design your ad campaigns if you know everything about your customer, including their favorite tv shows, their favorite music, colors, foods, etc .. the list is long and the information is available. With this in mind, many companies have jumped on the wagon as well and created pages which were first designed similar to the personal profiles of the MySpace kids but which were later (by Facebook and LinkedIn) converted into specialized “corporate” pages that reflected more useful and professional information such as business address, website and operating hours. With this said, it is not unusual to see large companies such as West Marine, AT&T, VeriSign, Cisco, Microsoft, etc to have Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles. Not only does this allow for corporate publicity, but it allows them to gather followers and directly connect with their customers. Twitter has been growing in popularity at an exponential rate. Almost all of the large corporations have a Twitter account and are generally tweeting anywhere between 5 to 10 relevant tweets per day, offering their followers discounts, special deals and other useful PR info. Setting up a Twitter account should be high on your priority list.
There are many other networks listed below that you should consider. Keep in mind that engaging your audience (followers & friends) and developing a strong linking structure between these networks are the keys to success.
